Shin splints is often associated with pain through the front of the leg, usually coinciding with an increase in workout/running intensity or duration.
There are a number of contributing factors to the development of shin splints. These include, overuse or excessive activity, increased BMI, poor biomechanics, excessive pronation (flat feet), poor conditioning and inappropriate footwear.
Initial conservative treatments often include rest from aggravating activity, icing and use of anti-inflammatories.
In more severe cases, customised orthotics are a highly effective treatment and are utilised to correct any biomechanical issues which may be present. Prefabricated orthotics can be useful but generally this condition will require a more customised device.
